About Sami Cisman

My name is Samsam Cisman, my friends call me Sami and I am the founder of Cisman Communications/PR, a Twin Cities based public relations firm that helps build brands for a wide variety of industries. I am seeking to run for State Representative seat in the Edina/ Bloomington district which I am proud to call home. I am running because I am concerned by the challenges we face today in our state and believe that I can no longer sit on the sidelines! As a young woman born in America to immigrants, I understand two diverse cultures and believe in and appreciate the freedoms and opportunities we have in the United States.

My parents moved here from Somalia in the 1990’s, during the beginning of the Civil War of Somalia when they were in their early 20’s. My father and my mother settled in the Twin Cities, raising eight children. As the second oldest child, I watched my father work and achieve the American dream by building a successful transportation business.

I want to run because I believe in this promise. The residents of our district deserve a sincere, optimistic representative who will listen to its people, and not just one political party.

I was born in Minneapolis, grew up in the Twin Cities, and now live in Edina. Before starting my Public Relations firm, I worked in the mental health field for 5 years as a behavioral health technician where I helped patients who suffer from co-occurring mental and chemical disorders. My personal experience in mental health has fostered my passion for this topic. Mental health treatment and solutions are important, and I want to raise awareness of these issues in our state government.

While working in our family transportation business during high school and college, I held various operation leadership roles. From my many years of experience with our business, I learned first-hand how government policies can hurt and help small business owners.

I earned a bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Psychology and Political Science from Metropolitan State University. I am also currently finishing an Addiction Certification so I can advance my knowledge of behavioral health. In my free time, I enjoy working out, going on walks around our great Minnesota lakes, and spending time with family and friends.

At a young age, my parents taught me the meaning of gratitude, at which time I came to understand and believe the words of Condoleezza Rice; “The essence of America – that which really unites us – it is an idea – and what an idea it is: That you can come from humble circumstances and do great things. That it doesn’t matter where you came from but where you are going.”

As I campaign throughout the district, I look forward to hearing from voters and better understanding your thoughts, ideas, and concerns.

We need a solutions first attitude in state government. If elected, I will bring my personal story and business experience to make our cities and state safer and more prosperous for all. I look forward to working together.
